Astra berdiri pada tahun 1957 sebagai perusahaan perdagangan. Seiring dengan perjalanan waktu, Astra membentuk kerja sama dengan sejumlah perusahaan kelas dunia. Sejak tahun 1990 Perseroan menjadi perusahaan publik yang tercatat di Bursa Efek Indonesia, dengan kapitalisasi pasar per 31 Desember 2011 sebesar Rp 229,58 triliun.
